Default Learning part

Hello all,
Because I am learning metalshaping with common tools, I decided to choose as a learning part or exercice a roadster rear side panel (quite similar to a 32 Ford). The size is same as for a pedal car. For doing this one, I can use english wheel, bead roller, shrinker/stretcher and moreover, I like its shape so representative.
After several tests, the results:

It's not perfect but I am happy with.
Only one question for the specialists : the bottom edge is too long and there is a distortion. I tried to schrink the edge and then blend the shape but nothing happens. What could be the reason ? How do you do to avoid that ? It's not really a problem because it' a part for training and also because I am going to do the wheel arch. I thank you all in advance.

Nice work Pat - you are much better than me!

Looking at the bottom edge, it seems as if you have used a shrinking machine; I think a tuck shrink, or two, would go deeper into the panel and give you a better result,

Cheers Charlie

Looks great! You should make the opposite side now and make a cool peddle car!

I may be wrong with this, but I feel that the metal would be best stretched closer to the back side to get it to lay flatter with the front which wont need as much stretching

If you stretch the area where the bead is going to be, you will find the the edge will not lift as much,( that is what you called distortion) unfortunately shrinking the edge now is not going to fix the problem At this stage simply stretch that lower edge and let some of that shape out, then use that stretch metal to form the wheel arch lip, the acquired shape on the lower panel will go back once that lip is turned
The other option would be to make the top panel on it's own then make the bottom section including the bead and weld the two together.
do another panel and let me know how you went
Peter
PS check out the video on U TUBE where I am making the same panel at a class in Nashville or an old video at a class in Seattle
Also if you like.... I can send you some picture of the one I have made here in OZ

Hello,

For Charlie,
Thank you for the comments.

For Kidpaint,
yes ! you are right ! If I success on this part, I will do the other one and perhaps the rest of th body.

For Peter,
Than you for your comments and tips.

When you say "The other option would be to make the top panel on it's own then make the bottom section including the bead and weld the two together". You mean like here ? :

For the moment, I am going to follow your tip concerning the wheel arch. I want to do it and see after the result. I cannot do it now because I don't have the right bead roller dies. I just have ordered them.

Sorry, I didn't find on internet the videos of your classes.

Once again, thank you all for the comments and sorry for my english.

Hello everybody,
I go on my learning part.
I have done the wheel arch. The lift is no more here (as explained by Peter). So it was possible to ewheel the part.

What I have learnt :
- the flange of the wheel arch is to large (20mm) and therefore, it's hard to stretch it evenly. I chose this dimension because I would like to put a little radius for welding.
- when i do something in the bead roller, I need a guide, for example, the border of the sheet metal but not only a pencil line.

I hope this thread will help other people. If it has no sens, please tell me.

Hello everybody,
After several months (and other projects), I come back to this exercice.
I continue the wheel arch welding a small band with a half radius :

Then, I have prepared the next part with 3 grooves and a half radius also on the edge :

Therefore, the welding will be in the middle of the complete radius.

Pat, that's pretty nice work! You are looking less like a beginner!
