More photos from day #2
Top View of cut in new stump PeterclassThu 007.jpg Top view of new cut in old stump - Peters blocking hammer PeterclassThu 008.jpg Peter giving paper pattern instruction early in the morning on Jim Hery's Bugatti fender. Scott White and A C Button, the sculptor, admiring Scotts work on a fender panel. PeterclassThu 034.jpg Peter using his wheeling machine to 'relax' the sections between the beads made in a truck running board. Button working on Cottons scale model belly tank Land Speed record car. PeterclassThu 037.jpg As a footnote: I have been privileged to spend the better part of the last three weeks in the shop and on the road with Peter, at Jim Hery's shop, the Oblong Metalmeet and here in my shop, and cannot fathom the depth of knowledge that this gentleman possesses about a wheeling machine, and he has been extremely generous about sharing his knowledge with me. We both like to design and build machines, but he 46 years of wheeling machine experience to add to the discussion, and as these discussions have unfolded, it is becoming more and more clear about how this wheeling machine was developed. Those of you that know me, know that I am a mediocre metal shaper under the best of conditions, but I do try to stay 'awake' and would just like to say that when Peter speaks, I listen.

Peter is a true Master. Period. That's not a word I use lightly nor one that I quietly tolerate seeing misused. Peter is a true Master.
In my professional sculpture work, a self-proclaimed Master is seen as a fraud. A true Master never claims the title for themselves and will typically deny or discount it when you use it towards them, pointing out how the work continues to kick your ass and show who is really in charge. Peter did exactly that on the first day, teaching us by showing how a recent project effort seriously failed twice for him with no good solution in sight before he could figure out how to solve the problem. After that, he's been working circles around all of us ever since, all day long. Very, very cool. Until I got to Will's shop on Wed, I had never touched metal to an English Wheel. At nearly 50 yrs old, I had also never in my life paid anyone for a lesson. I got paid to learn and had little interest in changing. Starting on one of Peter's world class cast wheels, with him standing there telling me and everyone else what, why and how to do it- no bs and no patience for bs, but having a great time with us from beginning to end- is the best start I could imagine. It doesn't get any better than that. This perspective considers my experience of professionally apprenticing under and working with some of the top Master Sculptors and Chefs in the USA- if not the world- over the past 25+ years. Anyone out there thinking about stepping up to the opportunity and resource Peter offers, I highly recommend it with no caveat. It's quite a privilege to be exposed to Peter's knowledge and expertise. Thank you Peter, for doing this for us. And thank you Will, for the push in the right direction- I'm glad you knew how much I would benefit from Peter and this class. Can't wait for tomorrow's lesson......

More pics from Fridays class.
Peter was VERY complimentary of Ben's new Machammer. PeterClassFri 008.jpg Others were watching as Peter used his skills PeterClassFri 009.jpg PeterClassFri 010.jpg PeterClassFri 011.jpg I have six wheeling machines in the shop, and after the first day no one would use any of them except Peters. PeterClassFri 014.jpg All were busy with working on Jim Hery's Bugatti fenders PeterClassFri 016.jpg Jim Hery welding on Gary Kelley's air compressor cowl panel. PeterClassFri 019.jpg Pre-stretching prior to beading a door panel. I'm starting to like this wheeling machine work. PeterClassFri 025.jpg Must be the hat! PeterClassFri 028.jpg PeterClassFri 033.jpg
