Student builds first car body - GT40
I just got back from San Antonio visiting a long-time student and being at the unveiling of his repro of an Alan Mann GT40, done in bare aluminum.
He planned for it to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Ford's Championship win, but it now seems to coincide instead with the "Ford vs Ferrari" movie, due to premiere in the next few months. George Schroeder is the craftsman behind this project. He has been a very dynamic student of mine for about 13 years. George is on the right. Photo is from about 5 years ago. One of a pair of "nacelle chairs" done with the hammer, in riveted aluminum. Leather upholstery. His primary training has been as a blacksmith. Studied with Frank Turley, traveled Europe and the US studying smithing techniques. Met with Albert Paley several times. Has a very light touch with his designs in sheet metal. This is a public artwork at the San Antonio Zoo. Hammered copper and aluminum. Riveted. 2012 This heavy-gauge copper fountain is a Celtic design, done for a very wealthy client in TX. Hammered and riveted. 2014 A few images of the car as shown now, and also "in process." shown with windshield in this studio shot Some little help with complicated attaching - but he took it all the way home from here. This is a pretty complicated job for a first effort at doing a car body, and George "Hammerman" Schroeder has the focus, energy and discipline to practice, practice, and practice until he gets it right. Metal is autobody standard 3003 .063". All hammered out. (He has 4 of the TM Tech Air Power Hammers, so he does not spend those precious seconds doing die changes or motor changes. I'll post a few more images later on.
