I use a Miller Elite
It has different settings like all good helmets and also has an X Mode for working outside so the sun doesn't turn on the lens.

I have had both the cheapie HF and two $250 Miller helmets. I finally had to throw out the cheapie, but have had more trouble with the Millers. They warrenteed one screen unit but when it went out again they siad it was out of warrentee. The dealer said to expect about two years. Two years , for $250!! I think they did last a little longer.
I also seemed to get more flash from the Miller ( sometimes not darkening or darkening then going back while welding. I'm not familiar with the speedglass.

I have had a Jackson for the last 12+ years now. Had issues with the head gear but resolved after an update requiring a new shell and headband. Takes two AAA batteries and has served well enough.
Two years ago it started acting up when the humidity gets high, just shuts off. Been looking at replacing it with a Speedglas. I still have my cardboard Huntsman helmets with the gold lens when I want to relive the old ways. I will hold my judgement until the Speedglas to make final my thoughts on the auto darkenings, the old gold lens is much easier on my eyes. |

How are the auto darkening helmets on gas welding aluminium?
I know Kent White's lenses eliminate the flare. Wondering if any auto helmets work for gas welding? Mine says it a #5 in the off position for gas welding. Sounds like I need to use dedicated googles for gas welding especially if I doe aluminium. Dave

Different ball game welding alum. Dave. You can't use a normal stick/tig lens.
I've got a Jackson auto-darkening I'll give you next time you're in Winston. Needs a new headband.

That's what I figured. Just curious.
I think I'll try the Ron Fournier googles and then move up to the Kent White lenses. Looking forward to learning some techniques at the Red Neck Roundup. Thanks, Dave

Have had a Jackson Blue Nitro for 10 years and love it. The only thing I replaced was the headband, and the replacement was better than the original. Solor powered and haven't noticed any issues when tig welding although it was mainly used for mig welding.

As Dirty Harry might have said if he was a welding shop foreman: Being as this is such an intense light, the most intense light known to industry and bright enough to blow clean through your retinas, is this lens fast enough? Well, feelin' lucky, Punk?

I like the dependability of my Speedglass. I have a $120 CIG I take on site (Doesn't hurt so much when someone decides they need it more than you. Lost two so far)
By the end of the day your eyes will certainly feel the difference. Sometimes its better to buy quality and cry once. Or, (at the risk of getting shot down) buy some goggles and gas weld ! I'm just learning it and really enjoy it The bottom line is you get one set of eyes. Cheers John
