Default Aluminum 41 Willis

The June issue of Hot Rod has an article about a very nice bare metal 41 Willis owned by some dude with money. Nowhere in the article is mentioned who built the body. Any fool with a credit card can order shiny parts and add them to a store bought chassis. The guy who built the body should have been the story.

Anyone know who built it?

Kerry, this happens a lot. A buyer gets the headlines and the builder gets ignored. I remember when Billy Gibbons' ZZ Top Cadzilla was revealed back in the late 80's. It was built at Boyd Coddington's Shop and if the build was ever mentioned, the response was that it was done at Boyd's. In a way, that's true, it WAS done at Boyd's. But it was Larry Erickson that designed it and an extremely gifted sheet metal man named Craig Naff that actually brought the drawings to life Even today, if you asked 100 "Car guys" who built Cadzilla, 98 would say Boyd Coddington.

I recall there was a trade school student that built an aluminum Willy’s on the old Allshops.org site way back.

Cannot attest to the car world, but sounds similar to stone sculpture work in my industry. Nothing is signed except the checks. Some projects are deliberated produced as contractually anonymous or invisible, whether it's a formal NDA or just an understanding between a patron, trusted broker and me.

Some of my biggest recent projects have been invisible as described. That's how they want to do business, so that's what we do together. The longest one lasted approx 7 yrs from beginning to completed shipped stone, mainly based upon their changing plans. You just cash the check and, in the case of that patron/retailer, promptly sell them another stone for top dollar. Very cool.

As a craftsman, you just need to choose what's more important- doing the best work or being recognized for it. As long as there's enough work, it's nice to be left alone by the peanut gallery.

Default Aluminum Coupe

I know that Lazze was using a Willy's coupe as the basis for his classes at one time. He got tired of building 32 Roadsters. I don't know if this was one of his or not.

I've sent him an email to let him know about this thread, and I'll post his response.
