I started making this last panel for the inboard side of the fender. It's a pretty tricky area with a lot going on. The rear half has a concave body line where the fin merges to the rear deck that fades away as it goes forward. Then, ahead of that, there's a small transition area before the front half gradually changes to convex as it rolls into the top of the fender. That body line also has a curve to it. I made this area in a separate panel because I knew it would be difficult for me to shape. I'm only about half done with it but it's looking like I can bring it in to shape.

It doesn't seem like I accomplished much today but I managed to get this last panel into shape so I welded the front and rear inboard panels together and got it to fit. I still have some wavy edges along the inboard side where it welds to the rear deck. I'll smooth that out and set up for welding the inboard and outboard panels together next.

I checked everything out and it looked OK so I welded up the remaining panels. I'm still messing with the shape of the tail light opening. I'm not sure about the area below the tail light. I'll have to get the fender on the car and check it against the other side. For some reason it appears to have more of an angle to it than the left side.

I went ahead and welded in the tail light opening reinforcement after getting the opening to match the one on the other side.

I set the fender up pretty close to its location and checked the angle of the area below the tail light. It's a raked few degrees more than the other side. I will have to slit it on the peak and correct it, then weld it up again, but not until it's mounted to the car so I can get an accurate match to the left side. It's an easy fix but it bothers me because I don't know why it happened.

Next up is the lower reinforcement rail. Same routine as the other side. Lots of slits up front where the tight radius is, bend and weld it back up, some hand manipulation along the length till it fits the buck. That's enough for today

Annoying when you don't know why you ended up with a difference, but I'm sure it happens to us all sometimes.

I finished the sheet metal work and lower reinforcement and shot some epoxy primer on the inside surface. Next, I installed the latches and guide pins, then ran the cables and release lever. Same process as the other side.

Now it's time to figure out where this thing goes. I set up with whatever was available and shimmed with wood scraps till I got it close. Then started checking and continued shimming. First, I used the dimensions that I noted before removing the fender from the buck. At the marked location in the rear, I used the square and spirit level along with the 3 9/16 dimension to get the fender level in the vertical plane at the rear. then the same process in the front. Next I needed to find out how far from the center line of the car it is and adjust based on the dimensions of the left fender to make them equal. I needed to do some trimming along the inboard edge mostly in the front half It took a couple rounds of trimming before I had it right.

Next I pulled a string along the bolt holes for the door trim and extended back to the end of the fender. Both the door trim and rear fender trim have to be dead on. The side trim on these cars are a very dominant feature. They need to be dead straight. I checked the lower edge of the fender with a spirit level and shimmed according to need then double checked that with the laser. All is good. Weld it up.

I welded it in with no problems and cleaned up the welds.

Jack, you are an amazing craftsman. I am enjoying this build. I'm sure everyone is anxiously awaiting the next section.
