Default LPG and Oxy to Weld Alloy.

Just posting this question, there is lots of information regarding Oxy/Acetylene welding and there has been questions of the actual quality of the Acetylene.
So with all this: Is it possible to weld with LPG/Oxy together.

A local Steel Fabricator has used LPG/Oxy for cutting for years and swears by it over Acetylene, and he claims with his usage is 1/4 of the price for Acetylene.
Apparently you can drop the regulator on the Oxy which is saving as well.

Any Thoughts.???

Well Oldnek, I've done it, and it seems to have more carbon in the weld than I would like.
O_P and O_A.jpg
Upper coupon is O/P.
Lower is O/A.

I should try it with a flux upgrade to see if that lessens the carbon deposits. I find also that using O/P for silver brazing gives me a colder joint and more smut in the braze area. For whacking steel in fab and scrap yards, the O/P is fine because the oxygen is doing its burn, but for my own personal tastes in joining molten metal, I prefer hot with clean.

I've also tried welding mild steel with O/P, and while I can finally get the heat up and make a molten pool on 1/8, it just doesn't flow to suit me. As Aaron Novak tells me, "It's hard to beat a triple-bonded hydrocarbon."

Curious about "drop"
Drop as remove or drop on, as in install?

John speak to Jamie I have a brief discussion to him about it at the metal shaping event and said it was not suitable and looking at kents picture it would be hard to get a nice finish ... stick to tig I think :-)

I just have the opportunity to have a G size bottle of oxygen for nothing, I don't have have acetylene but
LPG, that's. Why I put forward the question.
Looking at the testing by Kent, I think I'll stick to TIG.
It's a shame I can't use the the gas.

My gas suppliers have all let me swap one tank for another containing a different gas, or even up/down in size. If there was a charge for a larger tank or different gas, I simply paid the difference. Can you use the free tank for another spare Argon?

Mark, generally that would be a great idea, but here in Australia, we have to register for gas bottles and the amount you have, just so they can charge bottle rental. Our gas bottles are even bar coded, so one person can't even go an exchange the said bottle on his or her account.........
Just another way the big companies are making even more out of us.

That is the reason I have the opportunity of having this bottle at my disposal. It was a non exchange rental.
Cheers John
