I worked with Rick Mullin on a 1956 Maserati Zagato and the frame rails were air foil shaped like the end of a wing and aluminum.
I suspected at the time that it might have been aircraft tubing left over from the war being re purposed but that is a guess. I surmised that it would have been more difficult to work with than regular round tubing and couldn't really come up with an engineering reason for it's use in the chassis, on an airplane perhaps open to the wind yes.....but it did look really cool It is the shape of the tubing from Aircraft Spruce and not an oval in the strict sense of the word, but like I said it looked like aluminum.
