Default MK 4 Jaguar Radiator shell and other hand made brass stuff

I showed some photos of a Mk 4 Jag radiator shell in another thread and was asked to show how I made it.

First job was to make a jig, I made this using the old shell as a guide. The steel was bent by hand to shape and welded together to form a 'buck' or jig.

I took profiles from various points around the shell and cut the 'ribs' or stations of the buck out with a plasma cutter. The rim is bent from 3/4" bar strap steel is used for the rest.

Below is the original shell which the patterns were taken from. It was in a terrible state which make working out what the correct shape should be a little tricky.

I did not take any photos of the early stages of the work but I will show the making of a similar shell later in the thread. I have plenty of detailed photos for that.

Above- Here is what I made it is pretty accurate and the jig turned out ok. The plan was to make more of them but I am in no hurry to make another one!

Here is another shot.....

I polish the shell up just enough to see any imperfections it is not intended to be ready for chrome, it needs to be polished fully by the chrome platers.

Like a said I will be posting details of how I go about the forming, welding and metal finishiing of parts made from brass. Thats all I have time for now.

Here is the old sheel and the new shell back to back.

When I first looked at making the shell I sort of dismissed the rim around the filler neck but when I came to make it I found it the most difficult part. I will show how I did this first. This had to be done after the shell was fully made and dressed out so if it had gone wrong it would have been a big problem.

Sorry guys I have done a little work towards another DVD but I have not got very far yet. However apart from a little wheeling all the techniques I use to make the shells are on the first one.

That is sure some nice work David. I really like the buck. It is simple, but it has everything you need to form and use as a guide. I am interested in how you formed the filler hole. I have an idea how I would do it and it would be a project.

HGi Jeff I plan on showing that next. as I said I did not take photos of the early stages of the making of this shell so I will show the forming of the swage around the filler neck first.
