Default Repairing original 1938 Dodge fenders

Hi,

This is my next task that I am going to soon start. These are original fenders from Dodge 1938. Someone has tried to repair them on 80´s ..but here is what I need to fix.

Wire edge is a new game for me. And I think I will need to make a patch for cracked positions. The patch must have the wire and the bead. On Bengt Blad´s book is a good tool jig for the wire and he hard solders the wire from its ends to the old one. The owners said that the cracked places are mounting points and the mountings are missing on the fenders ?

The wheel well has no use and I need to make a patch for it like on my earlier fender job. And straighten and fix the dents of course. The cracks are probably my hardest repair on this one.

I will gladly take advices on how to approach this job ?

The fenders are solid metal and not badly rusted.

Hi guys,

I have been busy so I havent updated this thread for some time. I will do that now

All work that has been done so far is pretty much english wheel work.

Started with removing the paint and rust so see what I am working with.

Then I started to wheel the dents in english wheel. The sharp dent on top of the other fender was first. It bumped up very easily. Then I cutted half of the sparetyre cover off. This gave me room to fit the fender in english wheel. I did not cut all of it off cause I thought it would make the fender flimsy and hard to work. Air hammer was used in the lower edge of the fender cause the bead made it impossible to use the Ewheel.

I used wheel to bump the side up and blend the ridge area down and gotted the side to the shape it originally was.

Then I started to make the patch for the spare wheel hole and all the holes in the fender are going to be plugged.

I made a paper pattern of the side hole. The side hole was welded first cause the rounded edge on the spare wheel cover gives stiffnes and prevent´s warping.

Metal finished weld

Then the spare wheel cover. Made a paper pattern by using a carpenter pencil trick I learned from this forum Added extra material to the sides. Started to wheel the panel.Wheeled to shape by matching it to the other fender and used a radiusgage to match the shape. Cutted the rounded edge from the hole. Remembered to make straight edges for my panel

Putted the panel under the hole and used self-drilling screws to lock it for marking it. Next is marking and trimming and then weld the panel. That is where I am now.

I also have a 1938 Dodge that has serious fender damage.

Whereas you just did away with your spare tire divot, I am looking to add mine.

Excellent. Mine is a D10 sedan, so the fenders would not fit anyway.

Does it have a rear seat? Must be one of the first 'dual' cab pickups!
