Well done for getting shape of the month Tony. I did not see this thread until now. The wing looks very nice.
Its interesting that you say the quickworks is not powerfull enough to shape metal and is more of a planishing hammer. You have more machinery there than I could ever imagine but you still use the wheel to smooth the panels, I find this very interesting. I have the makings of a power hammer here that I will build one day, not because I need it but just because I like tools. If I were making those wings I would have made them in the same number of pieces so not so different even though you used the power hammers and I would use just the wheel. I guess it comes down to how much metal can comfortably be worked rather than what machines one uses. You said it was time consuming to make these wings, I would be interested to know how many hours were spent making the wings including the bucks. Its also interesting that you say that it is not possible to do a proper job of making a wing using the original panel as a buck. I make most of my panels where I have an original to copy without building a buck. I guess I am not doing a proper job then LOL. I would not have much work if I had to charge the customer for making a buck every time I have a panel to make. It seems to be very different in the US and Australia but here people just won't spend the money. Where I do make a buck I usually have to bear the cost. To be honest I don't think I could produce a buck that was more accurate than the original wing in any case. A pair of bucks for something as complex as the BMW wings I am making would take several weeks work to make accurately. Perhaps I am just slow?, I don't know I have never had anything to compare with when it comes to making bucks. I can see that you use the same method of welding as I do, I have shown how to do it with tig and gas but I just prefer to use gas most of the time - its a matter of personal preference. It great to what you are up to, keep up the good work. David
