Dave, we've only done insurance quotes on two buses, this was for cars that were at fault. Most cases has been driver error on part of the bus drivers, misjudging pylons or other obstacles in parking lots.. Those have been out of pocket repairs on owners part. So for the most part, we fix the bus and give him the bill, as will be done here. We've been working this one in his shop, and he's been there right along, so he's well aware of what's being replaced.
Well, only one more piece to make for the bus, we need a cap to join together two pieces of rub rail.... Bent up some 18 ga on the Baileigh magnetic brake... Then for the highly technical stuff, bent the rest using vise grips to clamp it in place and a dead blow to incrementally tap the ears around... Continued to use the hammer to tap it around, then tightened up the radius on this die/post dolly We'll get some paint on the bus parts tomorrow..

Thanks Robert, nice work by the way! I've worked on a few buses over the years, nothing serious just parking lot type stuff. Lost my butt on every one of those big yellow dudes I ever touched. Even lost my butt on a windshield replacement, new one had brighter color than the one next to it, bus driver said the difference between new and old was too much of a distraction for her, constant complaining to the insurance agent and the school board, finally I just replaced the adjacent glass out of my pocket to quiet her down. I was holding my breath that she didn't start down the sides one by one. Oh well, it was good will for the shop with the insurance agent, probably made the money back over time by getting the more lucrative jobs. Listen to me, still griping and complaining.
Anyway, I've watched all the guys here show a sample of their work and always enjoy this site because of the level of craftsmanship being so high, yours included. Thanks again, Dave. PS. Your upsidedown mig welding is very good. I could just feel the sparks rolling down my sleeve and into my shirt when I saw the photo.

Dave, I don't really care for insurance work, part of which stems from listening to horror stories just like yours. When the bus owner calls me for a repair, I can normally have it back in service in a week or two. Not bad for a part time shop When we had to deal with the insurance company, it took over two months for them to agree that their insured ran an intersection and plowed into the side of a BIG YELLOW BUS, and then cut a check, so his bus was out of service that whole time...
There are exceptions. When the barn fell on top of the Divco, I actually went and met with the insurance adjuster to make sure he knew how the vehicle came apart and went back together, and which parts were obsolete and would require straightening/fabricating. Every one of my concerns were addressed in his estimate. He did thank me for the learning experience afterward, and this is a guy who deals exclusively in vintage/antique cars and trucks..

Marcus, we're using BASF Urethene that he gets from the Thomas Bus dealer..

The other night while spraying parts, I made a couple trips over to the bus location with the spray gun... in between coats, to get some primer on the bare steel we put in... SPI epoxy on the structural components..
.....and some epoxy AND yellow added to the nice scraped up lower corner.. Coming together... Rivets were media blasted and urethane only, just like the screws. This shows how well the paint holds up to the installation "abuse"... Done!

Quite tempted to paint my Toyota Hilux Surf (our 4Runner equivalent) in that shade of yellow! |
