Default Bondo buck

I found a bunch of this Expanded metal at work.

I think I am going to try and use it for a bondo buck.I have plans today but tomorrow I am going to see what I can do with it.It was free so if it would work it would be great.

Tonight I was curious if I could get some shape into this expanded metal.

I treated it as if it was a panel,so I took out the flex pattern and shaped the expanded metal to it.

I was surprised how easy it was to shape it to the pattern.I used a 6 pound leather mallet for the hammer and used the stump to stretch it on.

The next part was not so easy. You can pretty much throw out the two finger rule.I still figured if it fit the pattern it should go into arrangement and it did with a lot of persuasion.

Here it is shaped

As long as I get it with in a 1/8'' the bondo will pick up the rest.

The next piece should be the hardest

The part I like is it really shows you what the metal is doing by looking at the different sizes the diamonds turned out.

Looks like a lot of work to me. Why not tack a bunch of pencil wire together on your piece so you only have to bend it? Wait a minute...

Johnny, that looks good. Know you got that for nothing but they do make the expanded metal in different gauges and it isn't that expensive. Let us know how it works as a bondo buck.

You may be on to something Johnny. The only issue I see is that when you cut out opening for access, you'll have the sharp metal edges to deal with but that can be overcome.

Kerry I am going to weld a 3/8'' rod around the wheel opening,so I can use it as a hammer form.

The whole deal with the buck is so I can hammer form the lips and flanges.I can not to afford any materials right now so I have to just use what I have.I wish the expanded metal was a lighter gauge for sure.Poor people have poor ways so I will just fight my way through it.

This center section is a challenge so I cut it up into two pieces.I got one shaped and now am going down for the next section.

Before I weld it I will place it inside of the fender, this was just to show you.

I can't help but get off topic...

I have actually seen expanded metal used UNDER bondo and paint.
Not what your doing but as support for the final repair!

It held up fine for years so I don't see why your expanded metal/bondo buck wont hold up for a while.
