Welding sheet metal with arc processes
Here is a good primer from AWS that discusses the relative merits of different techniques for arc welding sheet metal. A short read, it would be appropriate for someone just starting out who is relatively unfamiliar with the various arc-welding options for sheet metal.
http://www.aws.org/wj/2002/03/feature/ For those just starting out and others who are not aware, the manufacturers themselves have some very good info. The following links are suggestions and just the tip of the iceberg in respect to the info available. As a high school teacher, I made extensive use of educational materials from the red and blue guys, simply because we had red and blue machines in the school shops. The Red Guys: http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/education-center/training-materials/Pages/training-materials.aspx The James F. Lincoln foundation was founded in the ‘30s, the mission was and is to disseminate welding knowledge. They have been in the education game for a long, long time. Many materials are free, others are at-cost. You do not have to be a teacher to get most materials. I just got the free safety DVD from this page, after welding for over 30 years, I still learned from it: http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/education-center/welding-safety/Pages/welding-safety.aspx The Blue Guys: http://www.millerwelds.com/ select the gray “do-it-yourself” tab, and then “improving your skills” A wealth if info on the blue pages, however, not as well organized as it could be. Don't overloook the free pdf downloads, much good info there, that unfortunately doesn't show up in search results because of the file form. The Yellow Guys: I am not very familiar with their materials, but as they’ve been around for over a century, they must know something: http://www.esabna.com/us/en/education/index.cfm
