Default New Guy fm NorCal

I'm Ben Bob and I live in NorCal, although I grew up in the Midwest and later lived in numerous places in and out of the U.S. while in the military. I am working on an old pickup truck, and I want to learn metal shaping for that, and possibly future projects. I am taking a night class at the local community college for autobody/painting, and I have taken a welding class in the past. I have my own MIG welder and have some of the tools for beginning to learn metal shaping. I am curious about the "shrinking disk", and I look forward to being able to learn from the other members. Go easy on me...I'm pretty new at this...

So - NorCal is bigger than most of the other states. Where are you located? I'm in Sonoma County.

You should try to attend the Santa Cruz Meet. You'll learn more in two days there than a weeks worth of work in the garage. Took my shrinking disk last year and gave a demo.

What kind of a truck are you working on?

Hello Ben and welcome to the site. There are lots of threads here that you will find useful. one of the first tools I would invest in is a 'stump'. for steel you need a steel hollowing hammer and for ally a good wooden mallet. Some of the guys on here make them from baseball bats, this seems a good idea to me though I have never made one. Being in the UK baseball bats are not that common. I have one but I would not cut it up because my sister bought it for me years ago.

John,

I'm in Vacaville, CA (which is split by I-80, and located between Sacramento & San Francisco). I'm considering attending the Santa Cruz Meet, which I looked into after you mentioned it. But, I need to find out if there are still spots available. My current project is a 1950 Ford F-1 pickup truck, which I bought from the grandson of the original owner in South Dakota. I was stationed at Whiteman AFB, MO, at the time and drove up and brought it home. The project was started, but interupted by a 2 year tour to the Middle East. After that, I bought a trailer & put the pieces on it and brought it here when I was transfered to Travis AFB, CA. Advance many years... and sitting in pieces... I once again have "the bug" to finish the project.

Default Santa Cruz Meet

Rick is going to post up the info on how to register on March 1. Only 60 spots, so best to be Johnny on the spot if you want one of them.

Rick and John put on a great meet. Come early, stay late. You'll go home with your head spinning from all that you will learn. Also - bring something you want to work on or need help with.

Just keep watching the posts and you'll get more info.

Gotta go to Sacramento this week to pick up some backhoe parts, so will be passing right by your place. Buddy went to look at two 1948 F-1's yesterday. Don't know if he bought them or not.
