Good job. I cast metal and needed sprue cutters so I machined a tapered mandrel and made a paper pattern. Then based on the diameter cutter I needed I formed brass sheet around it and silver soldered the seam. The ferrule was 1/8" brazing rod also silver soldered.

Any tapered piece could be used for the mandrel, but the steel had the added benefit of acting as the anvil to refine the shape after the soldering.

Thanks Reno. And thanks for sharing your project. I need to learn alternatives to welding like soldering! After welding the thin sheetmetal parts of this project I spoke to an experienced welder and he suggested a different approach rather than MIG welding.

Glad I could help. I dabbled in jewelry making back when and realized that one of the keys is to use different melting temperature solders to build up ornate pieces. By starting with the higher temperature solders the later soldering of attachments with a lower temp solder doesn't remelt the original joint.
