It's coming together now Jack, must be pretty happy so far. I know I would be.

I made a simple cage nut for mounting the deck lid side rail to the hinge. It's just a couple nuts welded to a piece of 1/8" plate and held in place with a couple straps that will allow it to move enough for adjustment but not enough to fall out. Then I welded it in place over the bolt holes.

I mounted the side rail to the hinge and everything looks good. It fits and operates as it should.

Plenty of clearance over the deck when it's open. I wanted to get started on the left side but the heat and humidity are brutal today. This old duffer needs to take a break. I might get back out here later if it cools off a little.

Thanks Jack.

I'm really enjoying the build.

I started on the left deck lid rail next. Same process as the right side. Tip the first two bends along the edges.

There's a radius along the forward end that has to be hammer formed to shrink it down. I used heat to do the first one but it really doesn't need to be heated. I did this side cold. It just took a little longer.

Next, I stretched along the edges to start bringing in the contour to match the left deck side panel. It's not quite there yet. A little more stretching will get it done. Tomorrow's another day.

Hi Jack,

I see that you use the type of tipping rollers I have found helpful. You are using the offset dies, I made a set of dies. Since this picture I have made a thin headed bolt and recessed the end of the die for more clearance. My lower die has two different radiuses on the ends. Just swap the die end for end depending on the radius desired.

Jim, I have a tipping die but the contact area is only about 3/16" wide. It tends to leave narrow flanges all wavey. The stepping die holds it flat.

Exactly. I have a "std." tipping die too. It certainly has it's place.

I don't know if I've said this before or not, you are doing a great job and I find your work very inspiring. Thanks for taking the time to post all those great pictures.

Finished stretching the left side rail into shape and tipped the outer flanges. Then I installed the cage nut and added the corner extension.

So this side is finished, painted on the underside and functions right. Fits well along the edges. I didn't leave much extra flange in the hem area so the fit needs to be pretty close.

Gorgeous work Jack. Is that steel wool under the ground clamp?
