Question specific 2 Chicago Electric 90 MIG
Welding / tacking 22 G sheet metal: using only clean, virgin metal.
I have a gas-less Chicago Electric 90 amp MIG with limited settings: MIN / MAX and 0 to 9 feed. Its mild steel Flux Core wire. Using 3/16" hole, plug weld, straight down into the hole with 1/2" lead-in wire method I get too much heat & spatter. I use MIN and 0-1 feed setting. My weld doesn't fill the hole unless given 2-3 seconds, by then its usually over the hole edge & not penetrating well. This makes for a lot of grinding & clean-up. Other than getting a gas rig (no $$$) what can be done to get my settings & technique better on these plug welds using the CE 90 amper??

If all you are doing is holding the trigger and not moving you will tend to blow holes...or at least I do. What I like to do is weld a round bead inside the hole, touching the edge of the top part, and filling the hole outside inwards. Do it like any lap weld, just in a circular motion.
