Default Make a 50 ford shifter shaft

I need to make a longer shifter shaft for my Hurst body.
Needs to be about 25 in with the curve in the "normal" profile.

What type steel should I use that will hold up well?

Not a race car application, maybe some street antics though

Well, in my experience with mounting those and modifying them to fit what they were not designed for ....
Hardened steel is what they used. Take your pick of weldable - available - hardenable - 4130 or 4140 from one of the online metal suppliers in 1/4" bar to suit yer fancy ... saws well, welds well - after you have your stock part "annealed" - then take your weldment back to the same outfit for hardening.
ps, weld with 4130 filler,

MMMM I would read up on welding 4140 before you jump in 4130 much more friendly.

I make suspension tube nuts out of 4140 , I heat to cherry and drop in oil immediately.
Not high tech but it works well.

I have made a few shifters out of 316, mainly because it polishes up and fairly strong material.
