Made a Hammer & Beating Bag
I got 2 bowling pins for a dollar today so I made a hammer out of one & will make a slapper out of the other.
Made a beater bag out of a canvas bag I was given (got 2) filled it with sand and zipped it up. Put a leather doo rag over it to keep from cutting the canvas. bowling pins.jpg bowling pin hammer.jpg beater bag.jpg |

Try and find a baseball bat to make a hammer from. I believe you will find the bowling pin to be way too heavy.

Ha! Nice job... you'll have one forearm as big as your head with that thing. Looking forward to seeing you make stuff now.

Your gonna get a good laugh when I post pics of my attempt at a bowl after while.
I was looking for ball bats but the only one I found was a miniature one I bought it along with a pile of other stuff so I have nothing in it. Gonna make a small hammer out of it. I'm sure it will have it's uses. |

Charlie, How heavy are those pins?
I kind of like the looks of those. I have some lighter mallets, but every once in a while I could use something with a little more swing weight. As I recall bowling pins do not weigh much more than a bat, and you could always trim them down if you need to lose some weight. Interesting idea! How did you attach the handle? It doesn't go all the way through does it? If you trimmed the top off of that pin you would have a nice bullet shaped mallet head.

Actually not as heavy as one would think until you start swinging it of course. Think I'll make a slapper out of the other one. It was just a quick deal I still need to smooth the head where it was chucked in the lathe.

I see you've got two pins try this
bowling%20pins.jpg cut the top off and radius both ends user698_pic1712_1261099163[1].JPG so it looks something like the yellow one I use this one a lot for tanks and fenders the other two (to the right) are made from a baseball bat

Decided to rework the hammer a bit. Although I didn't use Ted's design as I wanted the hammer to have a long reach. I shaved some weight off of the fig end and now it feels very good. You can see some drill holes in it but those were there and found them after slicing it down.

Now you can practice a bit!
How did you attach the handle to the pin? Usually a handle has to got through so you can insert a wedge. How do you make the handle stay on? Those bowling pins are made from hardwood, right? That stump looks like a laminated beam. Those things are nice and sturdy. That was a good choice.
