Default Hammer Formed Frame Rail Sections

I offered to post these some time ago but life has a way of getting in the way of PLANS. This is an early EMF frame that a Northeast restorer wanted converted to a later 1913 rear kick up style frame. EMF produced automobile from 1911-1913. It was absorbed by Studebaker. The replacement sections were hammer formed. The material was 11 gauge 1018 steel. Heat was used to turn the edge over 1" mild steel profiled hammer forms. An inner and an outer. I created a radius closely matching the original chassis on the edges of the inner hammer form. The inner and outer forms were reversed when I welded the one inch channel flange to the dressed half inch hammered return giving a clearance between the smaller outer clamping form that was used on the inside and the larger inner was used on the outside to control the weld contraction. A single bevel style weld joint with a landing was used. 70-S2 was used as the filler rod. The smaller H.A.Z. and the clamping in the reversed hammer forms resulted in near zero shrinkage beyond the H.A.Z... I am going to try loading pictures of the process but it's been a while. The process DID NOT include edge welding. Jon

(... conventional wisdom has frame extensions / replacements cut and welded on the 45 angle, btw, moving the active load on the weld from in-shear to compression/tension)
..... Been awhile since my doing a 1911-12-13 car ....
