Hi Manny
Yes your right if too hot the zinc gasses out and will cause pinholes.
Adding the filler very regular helps cool down the puddle a bit.
In this matter the small things make or break the end result.

Yes these small things make it very special.
What thickness in mm are these made?
Thank you for this information!
If an old part like this has a crack or a tear Kent how do you repair that and what kind of joining method do you use?
Many people say to me I should use silver soldering instead.
What are your thoughts in this?

Greetings Paul

Thank you, Paul.
In mm these were .7 - .8 when new. They were .4 in places when I got them straight for 1st copper.
I like silver soft solder and silver hard for repairs. 55% is a fave, at high temps.

Thumbs up

Some beautiful Brasswork on this thread! Wonderful job on that grille shell Paul! Shame to have to Chrome it!
And Kent, those lanterns are awesome! Was this a restoration? Looks like you may have some metal spinning under your belt?

Thanks Mike.
Yes, Paul is doing a great job on this shell.
At one time I had 3 metal spinners on call, making parts for my lamp resto work. Now I am lucky to find one in 200 miles that can do sectional dies and can make parts smooth - without using a "rake!" (There is one guy on this forum that has acquired tools from one of my old metal spinners ...)

Hello guys
I picked up the shell to proceed and get some things done.
I made the center rib (don't know the right word)and with silver solder I joined it in.
Also I metal finished the inside edges.
Next time I'll bring the edges down on another way to prevent the marks from hammering.
That would save time.
Maybe a nylon little block to hammer on.
So far so good I'm pretty happy how it goes .
Now the nose piece has to be done.

Hello everyone
Here a few pictures of the shell that is ready now.
I'm very pleased with the end result.
I can't wait to see it chrome plated on the car.
It was a nice challenge and learned lots again.
Time for something else to break my brain on

Greetings Paul

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.
