Default BMW 320 Group 5

Finally made a start on some of the body kit for the race car. Baby steps first. Haven't really done any wheeling before (little bit at nightschool 30 odd years ago) and had never used a rubber wheel.

Material is 5005 3.0mm half hard. Didn't anneal the centre blade, but did field anneal (Kent!) the end pieces. Put some 2D shape into the blade with the kart slick and then went back to the solid upper to contour the blade down to the car roof. Used the APH (Kent!) to finish the shape on the ends and equalise them. Chased the step down with a piece of Delrin. Shape on the centre blade wasn't perfect, so it needed some slapping and filing. Still needs a centre bobbin to hold the middle in place at the planned subsonic speeds and some prettier fasteners.

Baby steps...

Thanks to everybody here for the inspiration to do this.

Thanks Axel - the 6 Series and the 1M need the company... Oh, as well as the wife's 135MS and the boys 2 x R53 Cooper S's. Not sure how my crappy Audi A6 got in there though... The Group 5 should go OK hopefully - 600hp turbo M50 and 5 speed sequential. There is a full build thread on our facebook page with all of the stuff so far that wasn't appropriate for here.

Have buddy coming round tomorrow to help me plan out the rear wing and boot lid. Just about all of the external panels will be remade in 1.6 ali.

You had me there for a moment as was wondering why you would put a sunvisor on a race car! Wasn't until I got further down in the pictures did I realize it was on the rear window.

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.

This (actually, the Lichtenstein version) was exactly what I had pictured, before I even opened the thread!

Nice work on "the visor"

Back around 1979, I was working at Austin-Healey West (San Francisco) and the guy working in the shop next door was building a 320 G5 for himself; he had all the bodywork formed (in fibreglas) and was stalled doing the mechanicals. It woumd up in our shop for a while, being primed/painted, before going back nextdoor to his boss's place (Sid Colberg, vintage Ferrari/Maserati collector). I never saw it beyond the rolling shell, in fresh white paint.

My "day job" is working on BMW's 1998-2002 ///M Coupes & Rdstrs__niche-market, I know__and several years ago, one of my customers presented me with the Art Car Series model of this one:

Our present BMW stable amounts to a '99 M Rdstr, a '99 M Coupe (both fitted with Eurosport Twinscrew superchargers) an '01 M Rdstr (factory delivery on that one) and my wife is still making do with her 3rd X5, a 2011 model.

A pic I grabbed recently, while juggling cars between the clean__waiting room__garage and the dirty garage; time out for a photo op! That's my EB Coupe in front.

Progress on the racecar sheetmetal.

Not much shaping, but bead rolling, drilling, dimpling, folding, hammerforming and then getting some buddies to spot weld up the tub. Blimey, their spotwelder cost $32k and looks like a cross between an artificial lung machine and the jaws of life. Just negotiating with them over their last but one spot welder which won't now meet current smash repair standards for all the new steels. Better in my shop than sitting under their stairs Anybody got a manual for a Hirane Auto Spotter AS 120?
