Default I gas-welded from one side to the other without filler rod and without tack.

My first gas-welded piece without filler rod and without tack.
I used sanitary spirits for mix the flux. (Thank you Bernhard).

Fascinating thread with excellent information from "the best in the business"! Thanks Kent, Peter etc...

Personally, I have found gas welding ali not to be too fussy, (torch tip size and gas pressures are critical as previously explained - read Kent's detail carefully!) but have never tried welding without filler. Peter's explanation of tipping up the edges to be fused is also a great lead for filler-less welding.

The alcohol mix tip is one I haven't tried yet, but will do so in future to eliminate one other possible troublesome variable.
One trick that I think David Gardiner proposed as regards flame control is to vary the angle of the tip along the weld seam as you go - that is you put more heat into the weld the more vertical the torch angle and the opposite, with a shallow torch angle, as one simply pushes the weld puddle forward without burn-through. No doubt the more experienced welders do this without even being consciously aware they're even doing it.
Happy days!

Thanks Peter! I'd love to have the opportunity to come and work with you for a week - I bet I'd come away with many new tips, tricks and ideas. One thing my mentor at Lynx told me was that "you'll keep learning this trade until you retire or die!". This was shortly after we'd spent a morning wheeling up a large section of a D-Type bonnet, which he promptly cut in half with the Guillotine and then scrapped. At 76 (back then in the 80's) he still made the odd mistake, but knew that sometimes it was quicker to start from afresh. "Every day's a school day, son!" Was one of his favourite sayings. RIP Frank x

fact to myself, Not every day the aluminum welding works the same way.
i think it also has to do with moisture in the air and in the material.
i do not mean too much wine ;-)
it takes many years and yes, it is right, always learning with each project.
practice practice to try and did not run the courage.
i also had to throw many parts in the garbage and near to despair in my teaching time.

Matt.. It's very true ..you never stop learning!

I have brought a 196 S Ferrari Dino buck and ''possibly'' will have excess to other 3 Ferrari bucks, which I will be using to teach from start to finish how to work these panels and how to weld them (particularly reverse curves)
These panels will be made in several pieces ...or one piece (if possible) . All this will be filmed and shown on you tube video in 2019 so beginners can learn . ...just look out for them. I will also have classes in 2019 and beyond, and they will be either a 1 day,
2 days (weekend) or.. 6 days class

Peter... sounds like you'll have some very interesting project classes soon. If only I had the time and means to come over for a six day class - that would be an amazing opportunity! Right... time to choose some lotto numbers 😁
