Default Metal Shaping in the North Woods 2017

I will be hosting the North Woods Metalshaping meet again this year on October 5th, 6th and 7th at my shop in Cumberland, WI. Similar to last year, the focus will be on making and repairing panels using primarily hand tools.

Most everyone from last year has already signed up to attend again. Here's the current list that I have.

1. Pat Brubaker
2. Shawn O'Harrow
3. Dane West
4. Henry Votel
5. John Draxler Sr.
6. John Draxler Jr.
7. Jimi
8. Dale LaRue
9. Travis
10. Mark Klein
11. Brock Shimon
12. Dan Pate
13. Phil Dawson
14. Alan Anderson
15. Steve Rixen
16. Bill Funk

We probably have space for around 22 people in total.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pat Brubaker will be here the weekend prior doing two separate classes.

Friday/Saturday (Sep 29/30) class will cover repairing and metal finishing damaged panels. You will go through the steps of repairing a heavily dented fender.

Sunday/Monday (Oct 1/2) class will cover basic panel forming with hand tools. This will be similar to last year's class but with a completely different project involving a more complex shape.

Pat's classes are $350 for two days and that includes lunch and all materials.

Default Hotel Info

For those needing a place to stay here are some hotel options.

Some friends of ours own a Bed & Breakfast. It is in an old church and they've done a nice job modernizing it. They are offering a special rate for this event of $75 per night. (Half their normal rate) They only have three rooms so they may fill up. For this rate they are not offering breakfast. However, they are catering breakfast for all of us on Friday and Saturday mornings (Oct. 6 & 7.) No online bookings at this rate however. Call Tia directly at 715-245-9044 (about 10 miles away.) (No more rooms available at the B&B, as of 8/14)

If they are full you can try Cumberland Inn & Suites. 715-822-5655 about $85 a night. (about 5 miles away.)

Rice Lake is about 20 miles away and has several options. Here are two, but you can Google others if you'd prefer.

Super 8 ~$70 715-234-6956
Microtel ~$80 715-736-2010

I also have some limited space for campers. If you'd like to camp please let me know what you are bringing and your power requirements.

Louie's Finer Meats is a terrific local meat market that has won many awards. None of the awards however, were for metalshaping so I'd better stop with that. I don't want the "Off-Topic" cops deleting my listing.

Default North Woods Classes.

Hey everyone, looking forward to a couple of fun classes and a first rate event! Here is what is going on for classes before the event, if you guys have any questions fire away! As of right now there are two spots open in the first class and three in the second class.

The Sep 29th,30th class will be repairing damaged panels and metal finishing. This has been a highly requested topic as a lot of you guys out there are not looking to build a whole body. But would like to straighten out some panels on your projects. This class will cover how to read damaged panels, hammer and dolly work, heat shrinking with a torch, shrinking disc, planishing hammer and metal finishing your panels so that NO fillers are needed.

The October 1st and 2nd class will be metal shaping with hand tools, this class will cover the fundamentals of metal shaping and how the metal moves. The goal for this class is to show that you don't need tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools to make nice parts! This class will cover pattern work, shrinking and stretching with hand tools, detail work by hand, gas welding and finishing out the seem.
Lunch, refreshments and all materials are included with each two day class. Cost for each class is $350 per person and class size is limited to six for each class. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for one or both classes shoot me a email customridesbuiltmine@yahoo.com or give me a call at the shop 1402-462-8581 Thanks everyone!

Default Directions

Two weeks out. I had a couple of cancellations so we should have room for anyone wanting to attend either the meet or Pat's class.

Directions: GPS has a hard time finding my house and shop so plug this address into your GPS.

2639 7th St.
Cumberland, WI 54829.

That address is for the 5 O'Clock Club, a restaurant about 300 yards NW of my house. GPS seems to find it without trouble.

I'm on 26 1/4 Avenue which intersects 7th street just south of the restaurant. Turn east on 26-1/4 and look for number 712 on the left. There isn't much on my road so it should be easy to find.

Not much parking on my property so probably best to park on the street. But drive down to the shop first if you have stuff to unload.

The photo below shows my shop - red circle - in relation to the 5 O'Clock Club. Most of you will likely be driving north on 7th street. Turn right just before you get to the restaurant.

Default What to Bring and Wear

Pat's classes start this Friday, thought I'd better get this post out for everyone. It's probably obvious, but I thought it would be a good idea to post anyway.

Those attending the classes and the MetalShaping meet will be working on a metalworking shop, you should dress appropriately. (i.e. long pants, short sleeves,work-types shoes - no sandals) You should bring you own ear and eye protection. Bring work gloves if you normally wear them. I have a few extras of some personal protection items, but not enough for everyone. Most of you will probably prefer your own anyway.

A folding chair wouldn't be a bad idea either. Most of each day will probably be spent on your feet, but it's nice to sit down once in a while and I don't have enough chairs for everyone.

Welding: I have both TIG and Oxy/Acet. setups with a couple of sets of helmets/goggles and gloves. I have equipment for one person to gas weld (aluminum or steel) and two to watch.

You might consider bringing a small selection of you own hand tools. I have a good selection and you are free to use my tools, but I'm expecting close to 20 people, so there could be bottlenecks at the more popular tools if everyone is relying on my tools only.

I have one English Wheel and I think Patman is bringing a second.

Lunch is provided each day. Snacks, soda and water will be available all-day.

For more info on what to expect, Kerry has a nice write-up here: http://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=4667

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. My cell is 715-418-9481 in case you can't find the place or have other questions as the last minute.
