Default Shop Updates after visit to Cass Nawrocki's

Here is a few pics of two items that I have gotten enthused about after visiting Cass's shop while at Dans Route56 event.

These are of the wide lower roller that I am making. Cass gave several of us some tubing and Dan cut it to size for us.

These pictures are of a gear made into a linear stretch roller as seen in Cass's book. I already had this gear, I just had to turn down one side and bore out the hub for the bearings. I still have some contouring to do.

Then on Friday, these three 8-1/2 x 11 pictures showed up at the shop. Cass signed them and sent them to me. I did not request these, so I am not sure just why he sent them to me, but I sure liked it. Maybe because I had given him a picture of the 96 car and the Panel truck. These will sure be put up in the shop

Hello, Mark: I do not know the alloy. It is 5-5/8" OD with 5/16" wall. It has scale on both the inside and the outside. No noticeable seam and machined quite easily.

super cool pics! have any extras of those gears laying around? I understand the shape of the tooth has quite a bit to do with how it works.

Gear teeth are basically all shaped very similar. There are two types 14.5 and 20 degree pressure angle. a visual inspection cannot see the difference. No secret type gears or whatever. Gears about the size found in a transmission are ok. The tooth sizes are determined by pitch, a 12 or 16 pitch gear would work well
The teeth are just knocked back with an abrasive to remove sharp edges.

Correction added may 19...............I made an error in the pitch saying 12 to 16. The pitch should be about 10. The smaller pitch number is a larger tooth gear which gives more spacing between teeth.

Hey, Brent, I did take a look, but the only other old gear that I found was way to wide teeth and very far apart, and very rusty. Sorry about that!

Brent,I was looking at the gear also .A old crank timing gear from allmost any old V8 looks about right and would be easy to modify. Should be quite easy to find.Bob

You might give some consideration to the diameter of the gear. A small diameter is going to have fewer teeth in contact with the work than a larger gear would. In Cass's book it looks like the gear pictured is maybe 5 inch diameter.

Richard, I am of the opinion that that gear is closer 6" than to 5". Mine is about 5" in diameter, and it looks smaller than the one I saw at Cass's. I agree that the more teeth and the larger the diameter, the better it works.

This is just an opinion!!! No logic or technical information is included, LOL.
