ALUMINIUM GAS WELDING VISOR in UK

Hi all,
I thought I'd let you know about a visor I've managed to obtain in the UK that DOES take all the sodium flare/ orange glare out of the flux burn off when gas welding aluminium and provides all the proper eye protection. After several unsuccessful attempts from companies that couldn't help I was about to buy some of the much mentioned and expensive products on this site from the US of A. However I live some 20 miles away from a large British Aerospace site that manufacture the wings for the Airbus and was aware of a specialist welding suppliers just down the road from them that I thought would no doubt supply them and would " know their stuff", and I was proved right! Whilst all the other suppliers I spoke too really didn't have an answer saying " nobody gas welds Ali these days - it's all done by Tig" - this supplier' s immediate answer was no problem we can supply you with a GWF rated lens that will do all that I was asking. I wanted a face visor rather than a lens or goggles as I wear bi- focal specs and they had them in stock for less than £20.
This green coloured visor is made by Sperian - a large well known (in the UK at least) welding products manufacturer so it conforms to all the required European eye safety and protection standards and the references on the label are :

If they produce a visor with this spec I assume that they will also produce goggles or lenses.

The supplier said this was definitely GWF ( gas welding flux) rated which is a UK term that is self explanatory so was safe to use with all welding fluxes including ali fluxes. All I can tell you is that IT WORKS. It has also been tested by an experienced Ali gas welder that has been using the expensive ones referred to earlier and again he said they work well with the Ali weld pool clearly seen and the orange sodium flare eliminated.
Hope this helps someone get the right eye protection at the right price if you don't want too or can't afford the more expensive options available.

Oops looks like the label on my visor is an old stock one as a bit of research show that Sperian have been acquired by Honeywell who looks to have sold this section of the business off as it now looks to be branded "Pulsafe"
If you google "Pulsafe CV85/5W visor" you should find several welding suppliers that stock it, just look to cross reference it with the item number 1002370 to see that it's the same item as I detailed in my initial post.

Interesting, I googled "Pulsafe CV85/5W visor" and got a link to this thread. This was a 2:41pm and Tom's original post was at 1:01pm. Amazing that in less than two hours it was indexed in Googles search engine.

Btw, this thread was the only link it showed. Any other links or hints would be good. I'd like a full shield for the same reason (trifocals)

Look forward to what you find/ think . By the way saw your recent posting showing your MG body build and Ali welds. Awesome!!!!! If only someday I could achieve a weld half as good! Must practice again tomorrow.

PS. have you ever thought of running an Ali welding workshop David?

I got my visor today. It works very well. I had no problem seeing the weld pool and there was no flare from the flux to worry about while aluminium welding. I also used it to weld some steel and it was good for that too.

Having to wear glasses these days is a bloody nuisance and I have struggled with goggles and glasses for a few years now. It was much better with the visor because I could lift the visor and still see. The visor is light weight and comfortable enough. Perhaps a little padding on the bit that goes over the top of your head would help especially for those with no hair like me.

Because these are sold here in the UK they must meet all European safety regulations which I imagine are very stringent. They carry the CE kite mark so should be available in most parts of Europe. They are also rated for Australia and New Zealand so I imagine they are available there.

I paid £24.24 including VAT for both the visor and the headband from the welding supply guy that calls at my workshop. He had the visor on the van as a stock item.

As far as I can see there is no need to spend a fortune on welding glasses, these work fine. Being a plastic visor it will be vulnerable to scratches even though it is scratch resistant and meets impact safety regs. At this price its not going to brake the bank even if the visor needs replacing every few months. (about £14.00 for the visor only)

I have no connection to the company, I don't sell these so do not have a vested interest. The above is just my opinion. I hope it helps.
