"Cheater Lens" Rule of Thumb

If you wear your Rx Glasses under your helmet and feel magnification would help, I found out, due to what I was welding, my "distance" from the work changed, and queried my College Roommate, now an Optometrist.

Granted this opinion was given while he was driving to work, but he gave the following guideline, which may affect how you approach selecting cheater lenses.

For the following focal distances, he suggested starting with the following lens power:

12" +3.0

16" + 2.5

24" +1.0-1.25

For those without the need for prescription (Rx) lenses he suggested the following: here in California, we have CVS Stores. To "fine tune" for personal use, he suggested going to their reading glasses display and using a printed card to check focus, sample the various magnification powers at distances you feel you'll be working and "test" what magnification powers work best for you!
