Default Another try at metal shaping

Hello Group,

I got a media blaster that was in need of fixing. The other thing was it was so tall (especially when I put it on wheels) that I would have had to stand on a apple box to use it let alone anyone shorter than 6' tall.
So I cut the base off and cut off 6" and then folded the edge to reweld it back onto the cabinet. I need it on wheels to shift things around the shop to maximize floor space use.

Anyway thought I'd share the progress so far.

Thought I was the only one needing to do some customization on my beadblast cabinet...... Hope it turns out good, Chris.

Hi Cliffrod,

Yes it was too tall for anyone less than 6' tall to use. I cut the 6" off the top of the stand and it seems to be a good height. Will be working on it this coming weekend and the next few to get it ready for the next step which is reworking the interior of the cabinet as it has some surface rust. Then new gloves and the dust collection system, maybe I'll have it ready by XMas time when I have a few days off to make use of it for the first time.

I'll let you know how it comes out !

I wouldn't stress too much about interior rust. Get it running, blast it clean and change the beads. Paint won't last in there anyways. What are you planning for a vacuum system?

Mine is a full cabinet and quite old with unique features that may have been called innovative, but which would be better described not very well thought out....

The biggest problem is bottom cone/collector which is only sloped on three sides (f, l & r) instead of four. This makes for more accessible storage space underneath because the back of the cone in vertical/flat against the wall. But the reduced pitch of the front side traps a lot of beads and greatly inhibits drainage back down to the collector at the bottom. It wont be a quick project to deconstruct it and change the cone configuration, which is why it hasn't happened yet.

Hopefully posting this will be instructive to others thinking about building a cone like this. I wouldn't recommend it.

Hi Cliffrod,

Yes I'm sure you are correct about the inside and the rust. I thought that if I start with a clean box maybe it will not get any worse. The bottom cone on mine is 4 sided and actually uses a negative draft shoot into a cyclone dust collector that usually is mounted on the back of the cabinet. I'm building a seperate stand for it and the discharge filter of the blower for better floor space use and allowing me to better store it when not in use vs the collector on the back of the cabinet.

Did that cyclone come with the cabinet or was it designed for a different unit?
