After fighting with the door jamb my patience was wearing thin so I took a break, had a cold attitude adjuster and went back to work. I had to do the final trim on the repair panel and check alignment of the rocker. Once I was satisfied with that, I tacked the repair panel in. The little extension that closes it all up will take some finesse work that I'm just not up to right now. Time to walk away.

Often works wonders just leaving something that is just not working out and doing something else instead before coming back to it.

I got the outer rocker and the quarter pieces welded in today. I started cleaning up the welds. I still have a couple uglies down where the rocker meets the door jamb. I'll spot them in after I finish grinding the rest of the rocker.

Got to be happy with those results.

I finished cleaning up the welds on the rocker and started fitting the inner extension. It looks like a pretty good fit. It's always easier the second time.

I finished off the right rocker and extension bracket. I'm not going into the details, it's the same process as the left side was.

I am going to do the doors next. After a lot of measuring and sitting on a stool staring at these hinges and what they do and how they do it. The choice I'm left with is either making longer (weaker) hinges, carving up the cowl area (which I really don't want to do) to accommodate the extended front door and hinge, OR swap the original hinges side for side and going to suicide doors. I don't really like suicide doors but I need to maintain rigidity in the cowl and firewall area. I need to ADD gusseting, not weaken it.

All things considered, I could spend a lot of time trying to modify the hinges and cowl to find that it won't work well or not at all. On the other hand, there's no doubt in my mind that I can get good results switching to suicide doors. I've done that before. I'll also have plenty of room to shore up the rear door jamb since this will be a 2 seater. I can reinforce everything as needed and not be restricted at all.

I've been thinking about my next move on this job and I don't think I can do the doors yet. This car will be sectioned a couple inches so I will need that done first along with building the wrap around windshield frame. The doors wil have to fit along the side of the windshield so it needs to be done first. I was hoping to leave the roof on as long as possible for structural support while lifting the body off the frame but it has to be done in this order. It makes sense anyway, the cowl and firewall should be my starting point. It's the best starting point, zero point to pull all the other dimensions from. So, over this weekend I want to get the car leveled out on stands, get new body mounts in, cut the roof off, and start cutting down the firewall. Lots to do. I'll get some pictures to you.

Before I cut the roof off I spent a couple hours stripping the paint off the skin. I figured at the very least I could use it to help me shape the buck stations for the rear cowl and deck lid. Best case is if it's clean enough, it could end up being the deck lid skin. Turns out it was still very clean. Some mild pitting and minor surface rust under the original paint. The car is in pretty good shape considering its age. I live in the rust belt so remember "pretty clean" is a relative term.
There were a couple dents up there that I already planished out so I think I'll separate the skin from the rest of the roof and hang on to it for now
