Dutch Comstock (Marty's Dad) is a really good TIG welder. When I got my Dynasty I was showing off something that I was pleased with and Dutch said:

"The difference between a TIG welder and a GOOD TIG welder is about 2000 hours".

He might have been kidding a bit but the fact remains that it takes a LOT of practice. I'm probably 200 hours into my 2000 goal and have realized that I'll not live long enough to get there. So I do the best I can and grind a lot more.

I saw a poster the other day that said something like: "If you spend more time grinding than welding, you are a grinder not a welder..." I'm working on being a welder. Some days I am. Some days I am not.

+1…….. what Kerry wrote. My lungs were so damaged after I nearly died from pneumonia that I admittedly became somewhat fanatical about minimizing my grinding dust exposure, it really forced me to improve my technique. Now where can I buy the poster ? ~ John Buchtenkirch

you become a good welder because you get tired of grinding.

HOWEVER... thats not to say you shouldnt be a good grinder as well. Too many times I see a need for better grinding skills.
