OK I know this maybe off the topic,
We all know how important is is for the material and filler rod to be super clean, The one point I have noticed that everyone does, is to clean the material well on the welding side,
But! what about the back side.

Wouldn't contaminates be induced into the weld pool from the rear of the material, causing possible gassing as well as weak and fatigue points along the length of the weld.

I have noticed on some welding jobs that I have done, the back of the weld appears to be cracked along the line or not enough penetration The weld is still strong, doing the bend test, and will eventually break at the weld and the weld is fully penetrated.

After discussing the problem to a Fabricator He had some pretty good advise from a boiler maker friend to prevent the issue. When he's welding alloy, he cleans the back of the material as well and de-burrs the cut line. If he welds thicker material he chamfers the back edge.

I have adopted this method and since doing this I have found no trace line in the weld (looks like the weld is cracked from the back or incomplete penetration)

I can say, that my problem came down to poor preparation and in-experience.
Just a thought as to who else has encountered the same issue.

I always prep both sides for the reasons stated as have noticed a difference if I didn't.

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.
