Auto darkening welding helmet
I have to buy a new mask for welding, but I see that there are masks with and without batteries.
Both mask have the same characteristics and the seller did not know what the difference is. Does anyone know the difference? |

I have a Speedglass 9002 a great helmet. It takes batteries, but in a few years I've only changed the battery once. Got the helmet used from a welder friend who was getting a new one. Bought it really cheap from him. Got extra batteries and shields really cheap from my welding supply store. Works great and turns itself off if I forget.
Don't know about those without batteries though. Dave

The mask without batteries just work off of a solar cell and id assume a small capacitor. Some of the higher end mask have batteries and a solar cell. On my Speedglas i almost never need to change batteries.

The only auto-darkening helmets I've seen that don't have batteries actually do, they're just not replaceable. . .e.g., Harbor Freight and Northern Tool.

The solar powered ones can go bad if left in the dark to long and I found they do not switch over from light to dark fast enough for the tig welder but work fine for the mig welder. I have a Miller helmet and it is good, though the next will probably be a Speedglass.
I have changed the batteries in the Miller once in 5 years, the cover lenses every 6 months. Batteries are not a problem to worry about. Tom

I also find that the cheaper helmets are OK for mig but not for TIG. I was getting flashed when TIGging. A new 5 sensor helmet fixed that. Mine has batteries. I've got a few solar helmets that just died and won't wake up.

I have an Accu-Strike welding helmet it works off your chin no batteries needed.
It is fantastic before you buy a speedglas or another brand look into these welding helmets.

I had quite expensive helmet for more than 10 years. The helmet works today, but no longer on my head. It was stolen two days ago from my workshop and I have to buy a new one.
According to your writing, helmets with battery could last longer, so I decided to buy Beta 90x with batteries http://www.kemppi.com/inet/kemppi/en...Product%20Info Manufacturer provides a two year warranty, but I am sure that this helmet will not die in the first two years.
