Default First try

Hey there.
This is my first shot so dont laugh!
I gotta say it got me hooked. I'm enjoying each and every strike.
I started with a simple small bowl, as I think everybody does (first two pics).
My wife loved it and snatched it to put her earings in..
Then I got greedy.. I wanted to make a larger bowl for shop use, washing small parts in petrol and such..
But it didnt go as well. I started by cutting a round piece and proceeded to malleting it out in the stump's bowl. At a certain moment I noticed that certain portions of the metal seemed to overgrew others and I didnt accomplish an equal bowl outline.
What went wrong?
Regards

Welcome to the forum, Rui

In answer to your question, I think you simply worked some areas more than others. My humble suggestion is before you start another bowl, planish this one a little smoother, and then you can see where it needs more (or less) shape to be symmetrical. Then go ahead and try and put that shape in, or shrink some out, as needed.

Shaping is a process that seldom goes exactly as desired at first, at least for those of us who are not professionals. And for those professionals, it didn't work exactly right when they started out.

Concentric lines drawn on your next blank might help you as well.

Your English is good, your photos are very nice as well.

Weldtoride gived you good tips, and as addition for it, to me it looks like you have arrangement problem..

bowl.jpg

As you look the edge, it is inwards, just give it a few blows, right on the edge, and it will form outwards, and follow the edge line..or you can push it out by grapping the edge with two hands, and push it outwards, with your thumbs..

bowl 2.jpg

In this photo, it seems to be same problem, work the areas outwards, and put the bowl upside down, on the floor, and stand on it, it will even out the shape,as well..

Hope this helps, give it a try

Thanks for the input and sorry for the late reply.
The problem(s), I recognize, may lay on my lack of hammerin skills (not every blow hits the exact area I want with the force I want) and also on the inconsistent way I keep laying the forming blank on the stump's bowl, meaning not every spot is hit and thus formed the same way.
I'll give it another shot today with concentric lines and will report back.
Regards

Rui, what is that project in the back ground? The one with 2 wheels and a springer fork.
