Some of my latest trial welding pic's.
The weld seems to be dirty yet I have cleaned and fluxed the rod and area well ?
In most welding vid's I see the welder keep the torch into it.
I find i have to take it away or a blow through will occur.
I've adjusted the flame, tip and regulator settings.
In last pic I can still achieve a nice result after joining the 2 pieces, but the time taken is much more than if laying a proper flat neat bead.

Put yout first tack about three quarters of an inch in from the edge and you wil not have this problem.

David,

I suspect the tip sizes 1,2,3,5,7 etc relate to the gas consumption in cu-ft/hr of the rig with that tip. Bigger number = larger hole and thus higher gas consumption.

I believe the only reliable way to compare different manufacturers tips is either by drill size (of the hole) or consumption. 00, aw202, #5 etc are all pretty meaningless.

For example, I use an aw202 tip in my Smith Airline for 19ga steel and it is a #69 drill size and 3cfh consumption.

Ken, that is the only info you will get on the tips here. We have guides that tell you what tip size to use for what material so its all you need.
Of course it does not help if you want to compare our tips to those from another country.

Attila Kokeny for the European manufacturers, Messer and CGE Rhona. They are not exactly the same sizes as the US tips they are aligned with, but close enough for comparison.
He also provided the Welding Thickness/Tip Size chart.
Aaron Novak supplied the #6, #7 and 1/2 size Meco Midget tip sizes.
Peter F. informs me that in Australia the big name in gas welding equip. is CIG. Their tip sizes, 6 thru 32, correspond to 0.6 to 3.2mm orifces.

Welding vs. Brazing

High gas velocities are important when welding. So you need to match the tip size to the material/joint.
Brazing bicycle frames is different. Some builders, myself included, will build an entire frame, from fillets to braze ons, with a single, large tip. Just by varying gas flow with the valves. (Maybe using a bit more pressure than my usual 4-5psi for larger fillets.) I own every tip ever made for the Smith's AW1A , but I could get along just fine with just an AW205, which is big enough to weld 1/8" steel. Other builders get good results using a tip as small as an AW201 for braze ons.

by the chart it looks like the #5 that David uses is between our #00 & #000
