Also for the beginner put a tiny magazine paper sheet between the part and hand and you will feel even better.
Nico, very observant, go to the front of the line, you know your s__t, the job is yours . Actually the photo is a so called selfie, I’m not left handed and unfortunately not ambidextrous so I was holding the camera with my right hand and trying to get a photo to post. You are right, my fingers should have been closed up for the best feel or read of the panel. Anyway my friend came over today and took a photo of my right hand with fingers closed………. hopefully one of the administrators will use the new photo to update the hand photo in my original post #1.

For years I’ve heard about feeling panels with a paper towel or cotton shirt under one’s hand. I have tried it and personally never found it that helpful. It’s easy enough to try and so many people have mentioned it, I would suggest everyone should at least give it a try……… remember I said none of this is written in stone. Regardless if you like something under your hand or not you want to get your whole flat hand on the panel, I see guys with years in the collision business feeling panels with only their finger tips and I just have to wonder how much they really know.

I have also enclosed a photo of how I push my vixen file for those that might not have fully understood my description. I very rarely ever file in line with the file body……. might leave a file edge marks on the panel. Once again I hope a administrator can move the photo to post #1. ~ John Buchtenkirch

P.S. Sorry I’m late with this post. I spent 6 hours in the skid-steer clearing snow & another hour plus shoveling it. I’m running out of places to put it. Next day I was totally exhausted, at my age there just isn’t as much gas in the tank.

Tom, good point, I’ve been doing that for years. If you’re having trouble feeling a panel close
down the visual sense for more focus on your feeling sense. So your brain is OK or we are both
screwed, maybe we can get a group rate at the Doc . ~ John Buchtenkirch

great stuff. I'm accustomed to production style bodywork but this aspect of it in regards to gauging your straightness is something I can identify with. I think it should also be noted that a good hand feel is something that you develop over time. I was taught this by a mentor so I started by going around hand feeling everything. It's a great tool.

Tin man technologies or Boggs tool and file are the best places.

Mike, If you are talking about an adjustable auto body file holder there’s usually a dozen or so on eBay almost any time. Try this link http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...Bfile&_sacat=0
and good luck. ~ John Buchtenkirch

I sometimes use spray stencil ink for a "guide coat", a light dusting drys quickly and washes off easily with solvent, just remember to shake it well and try not to store it standing upright.(a lot of pigment, it will clog,... I know!...)*
