I found the link to Richard Ferguson's well thought out research on Helve Hammers. For those who have not met him, Richard is an engineer turned metal artist. Back at MetalMeet '01, he and I worked on measuring ewheel deflection as a way of validating a spreadsheet he had created to predict ewheel stiffness. That spreadsheet is posted on our site and I use it every time I think about designing a new ewheel frame. He's a really smart guy.
