The wife and I wheeled out the drivers side doorskin for the 34 the other day.. What surprised me is that shes a natural..
I layed the skin on top of the old door skin to gauge where we were at and while im feeling around and seing where it touched and where it didnt, she pipes up.. "It needs stretched across here ( indicating the lower central area) and more here to make it lie flat... " whats really scary is she was spot on... she is dyslexic and im wondering if the way she sees things is more abstract enabling her to look at some stuff and work it out just like that.. ?? Whatever it is Ive booked her to finnish the roof skin and the passenger door skin... heck I might even pay for dinner...LOL... With my cheep camera its just about impossible to get a picture of the double curvature and the fit of the skin... the edges have to be trimmed and tipped before fitting.. but the skins in the ballpark.. The original door skin doesnt look to bad in the picture but th bottom repair was pretty poor and the filler was up to 1/2 an inch thick The remains of the filler and a heap of filler dust.. This is just some of it, I actually chiselled off most of the filler it was so thick.. starting the wheeling process, I maked the skin with black marker in high medium and low areas, wheeld the central area to raise up the panel then out to the next line to wash out then out to the edge to get the full shape, all the passes crossed the centre area.. which raised up nicely.. after about an hour it was close The door frame was also rusted out so a replacement panel was gas welded in

Ian, I can't believe your wife would wheel with you, I would have to buy dinner just for daring to ask!.
Its a bit late now to give advice but I would have made the doorskin with the swage (bead) in it and put the weld in the belt line just above the swage, in this way you will get much less hasle with distortion and its not that much work to make the swage. Thats what I did on both doors of the '33 I posted a photo of earlier in your thread. David

Dave, I see where your comming from, I was kinda hoping it would go OK although it is tight to get a dolly up there.. Im still learning loads and would be a bit worried at making the swage. Among other opperations, swages on panels like this are one of my fears and one of my many weaknesses.
A couple of questions on that one would be, what would be the best way to form that swage and would it just be a case of light bending with hand pressure on the swage to shape the skin to its contour across the width o the panel... The third question that springs to mind is would I have to overstretch the top area to accomodate the swage or would that only depens on the method of forming... ie beating it in over a former or bead rolling it or pullmax.. ??? Scott... I got to get me a pallet, Im 6foot 6 and the wife is 5foot 7 yet she managed to keep her end up though (oooeerrrr) .... Pete, believe it or not we never fell out once, infact today is her day off and shes just asked if we will be wheeling today...

Ian, that skin looks great.
I would think that there would be no need to pre stretch the top part for the bead as it goes right across and off the ends of the panel. My concern would be getting it straight with no wobbles(the swage that is) A good fence on your nibbler would be best.

Ian when I made the skins for the '33 I simply put the swages in with a swager. I did not have a pullmax. so long as you only have an inch or so the other side of the swage (bead) its pretty straighforward. Use a fence and trim the top edge of the panel to get the correct line. Tapered swages are a bit harder.
David Oh and by the way you are far too tall to be doing metalwork! I should give up now if I were you.
