New guy in Montana

Hi, I'm Brent. I'm a wildlife biologist in Montana. I've done a few modest auto body repair projects in the past, but I've recently pulled my 1973 Porsche 914 that I've had for 30 years out of the weeds for a full, stripped to bare metal, restoration. Details of that project can be seen here if you are interested. There is a lot of rust repair to be done on this car that will require replicating sheet metal parts. So I'm hoping to learn from this community to up my remedial metal shaping skills. I'm particularly interested in hammer forming techniques as that seems the best way to get where I need to go with a minimum investment in tools. I'm also an accomplished woodworker with a well-equipped shop, so making hammer forms plays to my strengths I think.

Saw a 914 made into a pickup truck once. It was a shop truck for an old outfit called "Troutman and Barnes."

Brent, welcome to the forum. I attended Bozeman back in the late 70's and I drove a '72 914 back then. It was a fun car even though I only had it a year. Once I left Bozeman, I really needed a truck for my job, so the 914 had to go. It would be fun to have that car back, but now they are expensive. Good luck with your restoration.

Looks like a nice job your doing there.
I can still vividly remember the smell of burning rubber undercoating and all the rusted metal repairs 30 years later on my 67 912.
And my repairs were not even close to being as nice as yours! :-)
