Default Weld & Grind Stainless Steel

I recently attended a safty meeting at work about welding and grind cast iron and stainless steel.
I can understand the concerns about stick welding these metals because of the nickle and chrome contents. What I don't understand is that to grind stainless they want me to where a full body suit head to toe, even footies.
The meeting was on the day shift and I work the 2nd shift, off shift, kept in the dark and fed alot of,,, well ya get the picture.

I'm thinking that Pugsy bee'n in the SS business can chime in here. I'm OK with safty like wear'n a mask when grinding, but the full suit thing I don't get.

Default skin pores

The dust particles are fine enough to be absorbed into your body through your skin. Hobbyist that don't do much get away with light exposure. Doing it all the time 8hr's a day will take a toll on your health. Same with welding fumes soldering ... Remember what Mickey Mantle said "If I knew I would live this long I'd of taken better care of my self"

spent nearly 22 years welding and grinding stainless steel, never used a mask (most probably should have) , no real side affects yet........ except for standing up very well to salt water and the odd fridge magnet wanting to stick to me..

what i have been told that nothing will really 100% protect you from stainless fumes except a fresh air hood.
fumes from stainless are given off any time is heated which inculdes grinding.
this all sounds overkill, but it is your health.
ever seem to get a head ache after working with stainless? this is a sign that more pre-cautions should be taken.
my 2 cents

The guys I worked with at a tank shop in Cincy once upon a time insisted on wearing masks for any grinding and welding applications. A few of them had plugs on the mask so they could stick a ciggarette through it and smoke while working. the rest, they just took more smoke breaks. But by golly they wouldnt turn on the grinder or strike an arc unless they were wearing a mask, no sir!

Almost correct.

400 series stainless is magnetic.
We use it to keep our fridge doors closed although we once stood up a cooler and the doors wouldn't stick. Yep, wrong series s/s.

As for fumes, just look at how normal I am. OK, lets look somewheres else.

We had the health and safety inspector pay us a visit and he didn't mention anything about masking up for welding stainless.
I never have as there's no smoke whatsoever. I know, its the fumes that get you.
Also, I've never seen anyone where a mask welding stainless.
Dosn't mean its OK but that's about the extent of what I know.

I guess it can't hurt to mask up but fiull body armour sounds a little extreme.
