I love the twists and turns Jack of this journey you are taking us on!

5 star rating is not enough for the knowledge and detail you are sharing.

I did lost wax casting ( mostly jewelry) back in college and if wanted to replicate a piece over and over we would make a rubber type mold using our original wax plug and then every time we wanted to make that piece again we would pour wax into the rubber mold and then use that casting to use in the investment casting. I hope my ramblings made sense.

I pulled the guts out of the tail lights and trimmed everything down as much as possible to get it all to fit in the smaller 49 housing. Then I started cutting templates from cardboard.

I transferred the template shapes to the wax and cut them out. Then started joining the pieces together. This set was originally intended to be the left side but I need to make some changes for the left housing so I'll use this one on the right side. They are symetrical but the left side will need to be modified inside. I am going to try to hinge the left tail light so I can put the gas filler tube behind it. At this point, I'm not sure if I can. The guts for the tail lights include the processor, 22 LED lights, a separate reverse light card, and a separate side marker light so the housing is pretty deep. I don't know if I can get it to swing out to the side and clear the opening in the body. Maybe some small tracks and slide it straight back? I'll find out soon enough.

IIRC, in my early days as a gas station jockey, I believe I remember the (Left) tail light lens for a mid-50's Caddy that hinged and swung up to reveal the filler cap and neck. Think that might be possible?

Nice wax-work Jack.

Do you join the pieces using heat?

Cheers Charlie

Still plugging away. I finished the right side housing without too much trouble. A lot of test fitting along the way. I have to fit these housings into the openings and still be large enough inside to stuff the guts into them. This side wasn't too bad.

I started on the left side next. The right side was tight, but this one will be a little tougher. I have to hinge this side and still fit it into the same size opening as the first one.

I use a hobby knife. It's like a soldering iron with a few different shaped tips.
