Default Making a baseball bat mallet

I'm looking for some (helpful) advise before I make my mallet. The bat I have is about 32" in over all length. I was wondering where to make my cut, about half way? so a 16" handle before being re-joined?

I was just looking for the length of the handle and the length of the head, and whether to center the handle in the head or offset it slightly towards the larger end to help give it a better balance?

Any advice before I start cutting?

Default Kerry is your man for advice on this -

but when I did it, I cut it about 14 inches or so long. Then after I had rounded the ends as I desired, I balanced the head and drilled at the balance point.

Remember when doing all this to watch the direction of the grain, so you have the handle in the 'strong way'.

I both wedged and epoxied the handle into place. Found the knob on the end of the handle too large to fit in my hammer rack, so it's got flattened sides now. John

Yep, that's the way I do it too. Balance the head on something like a 1" dowel rod to find the center of gravity so that you have approximately equal weight on both sides.

I don't remember how long the head is on mine.....I just kinda found a good place to whack it and figured out the rest from there.

Nice mallets Chris,

Cj everyone got it right. Drill the hole at the BALANCE point. And make sure you drill the hole perpendicular to the axis of the head...it tapers and if you just lay it down, your handle will be at an angle. I just shim the small end and drill. Epoxe the handle.

Okay, run the grain on the head side to side. Not top to bottom

The grain on the handle front to back? or side to side
