Aus Metal Shapers Gathering bowl
Been encouraged to share the little project I learnt to do while at the metal shapers gathering to hopefully lead to others doing the same.
Thought I would have a go at making a bowl from some scrap steep sheet. Started by roughing it out on the stump with a hollow curved in it. Did not hammer near the edge as that needs to be shrunk and not stretched like the middle. I have the same English Wheel as this at home so used this one to start the smoothing out process. I had not used my own for more than an hour before this weekend so was looking forward to see what I could do with it. I was pretty slow as first concentrating on wheeling through the middle on each pass. My tracking paths were getting better the longer I worked on it. Went back to blocking some more but thought I would add more shape away from the middle so I didn't just end up with a cone shape. Practiced some radial wheeling which was like starting over again, but good to learn. Started getting the hang of the wheeling on the side but still much harder than straight lines. To blend the bottom into the sides I went back to going from the center and out to the edge. My wife holding the bowl to see what I had been up to while she had been away walking around the lake and shops with Kuma our Akita in near by Ballarat. Thought I would dress the edge up a bit and learn how to use a bead roller. ] The other piece I did on the first day so I could see what it was like to wheel with some inner tube over the top wheel and also reverse the direction to get an S shape. Ran it through the bead roller to see what a small step would come out like and also use a tipping wheel on a curve to tip a flange. Tipped the bottom flange as well and used the shrinker stretcher to help keep the shape while doing so. I have not touched the surface at all with a file or sand paper, apart from the cut edge, and the finish is just from the wheeling. Was a great meet and gained a lot of experience and made a lot of new friends. Well worth attending if you should ever get the opportunity.

Marcus, looks like you've made a hub cap! Sounds like you had a good time and learned a bit in the process..

Think the men see it as a hub cap and the ladies as a salad bowl.

Marcus, you turned a piece a sheet that looked like a walnut shell and transformed it something beautiful, Salad Bowl, Hubcap or Man Hole Cover it doesn't matter. The skill to create something like that is pretty awesome.
I must admit it was tiring watching you wheel that baby as smooth as it's bottom .............."But Hey"!, Look who can now achieve bigger and better things. The imagination is unlimited. Nice piece of work, as well as the 1st piece you were working on. Cheers John

Thank you John's.
Was great meeting you both and hope to again one day meet again. Been busy looking at the threads already posted on here in the automotive section, but with 27 pages of threads, might take a while. Looks like there is plenty of inspiration there already.
