I'm making progress slowly. There are so many curves converging in the back end of this car that it's difficult to get accurate measurements. I have the upper framework done and started on the lower. This one is a 1 1/2" .065 304ss. I wanted a bigger radius on the bottom edge so I used the larger tubing there. I put the bend in the same way I did the upper. A little more smacking to do the larger tube but it only took a few minutes to get what I needed. That piece of wood laying next to the tube is the back edge of the buck that I used to make the rear body panel. I saved it so I could use it for this.
Next I welded the lower center tube in to the bumper brackets and started making the inner curve for the left side then tacked them in. I'm making one side at a time right now because I'm not sure how it's going to look. I want to see it fleshed out before I make the second one (RT side). I have a piece of wood clamped to the lower edge of the skirt so I know how high and at what angle I need to be for the lower edge of the bumper. Then I taped a welding rod on to represent the back edge of the tail light lense, downward to the back edge of the fender, then extending further down along the back edge of the bumper. This will help me get a straight line on the bumper corners. I started cutting some templates and taping them to the frame to see how it looks. I'm not really sure yet. I think I have a day of cutting templates and scratching my head coming up tomorrow

I had to stop work on the rear bumper for a couple days. We had a minor flaw in the casting for the right tail light. The aluminum failed to completely fill the mold so I made another pattern and sent it off to Kelly. We'll try again.
Back to the bumper. I started cutting templates to see how the bumper will look. It's easier to picture it in your mind if it's fleshed out. The car is still on jack stands and I barely have room to work back there. I can't stand back and get an overall look at it. At first I thought it looked too big, but the car is big. No, the car is huge! And the original rear bumper was massive. As I started hanging the templates on it, it seemed to fit in with the proportions of the car so I'm going to go ahead with it.

I finished cutting and fitting the templates and transfered the shapes to Stainless sheet. This is 304 x .065 polished. I'll still have to polish after the welding is done but the polished sheet will save a bunch of work later.
I made the center in two pieces. With the recess for the license plate, there's only about an inch or so of material above and below where the plate will be. It will also be easier to wheel some crown in with two smaller pieces. I didn't cut the opening for the plate yet so I can wheel shape into the whole length evenly. I need a very low crown and a long sweeping curve. It took a little while to get what I wanted. Stainless is tough to work with so you usually won't have problems with overwheeling (Going too far). I just took my time and measured crown and curve as I progressed. I will have to make a mirror image of this so I need to match what I've done with this side so I can duplicate it on the other side. Right now I have a good fit and an even, low crown. I am thinking about going a little further with the crown to increase light reflection. A flat polished surface will only reflect light in one direction. If you held a flat mirror in your hand and adjusted the position until it was at the correct angle to reflect the sun to your eyes it would illustrate what I'm saying here. You would see some light in the mirror but nothing like when you finally find the sun and vaporize your retinas. If you swapped out that mirror for a convex mirror and did the same thing you would have a very wide range of positions that would reflect the sun light directly to your eyes. This is why you never see a flat piece of chrome or polished trim on a vehicle. It will appear dull compared to a piece with a crown or shape. I don't really need more crown to blend with the rear body panel, there isn't much there. I'll put in a little more then call it good. After that I can cut out the license plate recess and drill the holes for the back up sensors.

I managed to get the left center panel wheeled out and it's a very good match to the right side so I tacked it in place and moved on to the left inner curved section.
I didn't need to wheel anything on this part. It's just two curves. I roughed in the curves with a dead blow mallet using my bat hammer laid on the bench as a form. Then I used the PU wheel and a couple different sized anvils to smooth and finish the bends. When I got what I was after I tacked it in place. Now that the two center pieces are tacked in, I could cut out the opening for the license plate panel and make a template for that. Moving on to the left outer curve. I roughed in over the stump and did some hammerwork . I did some planishing, then back to the PU wheel to get some bends in. It's not finished but getting close to the right shape. Tomorrow's another day.
