Default Heads up on a TV show tonight

I have no idea how this will relate in to shows in your area but on New York’s public broadcasting channel WNET (channel 13) there is a NOVA program “Secrets of the shining knight” which covers how armor was made in medieval times. The show starts at 9:00 in New York and runs an hour. Jeff Wasson is the featured armorer but I’m watching this for the first time myself so I can’t give a personal recommendation, just a heads up. Enjoy……….. hopefully . ~ John Buchtenkirch

Thanks for the heads up, John. Much appreciated. Just checked the schedule and I'll be watching it tonight on Nova here in SC.

In case anyone misses it for whatever reason, you should be able to watch it online on Nova's site anytime after it airs. The Nova episode on crucible steel with Rick Furror (sp?) from a few years ago is one of my favorites that might also be of interest to others here, even though it's more about knifesmithing and blacksmithing.

Rick is in this episode as well, working again with iron blooms to develop steel. Very cool.

AC, I watched that with great curiosity, the episode you refer to was about the Ulfberht steel. Very interesting metal work. Both of these episodes were great. The metal work during that time period was incredible.

I was really impressed with the bluing of the armor after the gold inlays. Didn't know that was possible.

I was interested in the bluing process myself but felt like something was left out, we all pretty much know here that after you blue metal with heat brown rust is only a day or two away. I would think there’s a rust slowing process they left out.
I was hopeful there would be more on shaping the armor but the focus seemed to be more on tempering it to be bullet proof…….. anyone interested in making bullet proof cars for the mob ? After seeing what they went thru to make some sheet I feel very lucky to be able to just get on the phone and order some. ~ John Buchtenkirch

I agree totally with you, getting metal with an order. I was always amazed at how the suits of armor were able to be made in the 1500's that were shining bright steel. I can't imagine the process they went through to keep those from rusting, especially for the very detailed suits of armor. The fit and finish on those suits were much better than I had ever imagined.

After bluing the way stop/slow the rust was heat it and melt bees wax I was taught this by my metallurgist father , simply bees wax a product that was around since tome began.
Living in the Michigan the rust belt [ means they use salt on the icy roads ] getting bolts out can be a bitch , I was told by a Alfa Rameo mechanic Heat it and melt bees wax .
