Has anyone tried ceramic shot? Seems like a good compromise betweem glass and steel shot.

Another thought would be tungsten shot. Here is the MSDS

http://www.tungsten-spheres.com/MSDS-Tungsten_Shot.pdf

It is available as a #9 shot size (0.080 inch diameter), weights near lead, does not corrode easily, low toxicity and is a mere $42 to $52 a pound Other than the price, it would likley be ideal.
Holy cow, if your goal is to make the worlds most expensive shot bag, I think you found the answer!

I used to use sand in my bags, now the shop i'm at is all lead, the feel is much better. some of the larger bags (20'' diameter) are 50/50 sand/lead to cut weight. they also have a good feel. I've never used steel shot, It seems like it would last a lot longer then sand and lead, I wonder if you could pack a bag with 75/25 steel shot/Desiccant like what you find in packaging?

When I filled mine I got the sand at Menards. They had silica sand which I didn't buy, but I did buy the tube of sand for weight in the back of a truck. It looks totally different from the silica sand, it is like masonry sand. Does it still cause silicosis??

Default Silicosis

Tom,

If it has silica, it can be an issue when pulverized into dust and inhaled - at least that's my understanding of it. I would suspect that any 'sand' would have silica in it - but I may be wrong.

So I used the bag of black magic blasting sand that I had sitting in the corner. Its coal beads i'll have to look at its toxisity lable. The little pounding i've done with it holds well.
