Greetings, from Ontario, Canada
Good Day!
My name is Mike, I am from Ontario, Canada. I have very little experience in metal shaping, but a great interest. The son of a sculptor (stone/wood, etc) I grew up appreciating the efforts required (planning/understanding materials, tools and processes) to achieve forms in various media. I went on to become a graphic designer but soon found that, although it was very lucrative, this area of "art" was more commercial than I assumed it would be. I eventually left that field after 15 years to begin a new career being self employed. My father and I had planned to venture into metal shaping, primarily to work on a couple of projects together (two Honda CB 750s we planned to make into cafe racers). Unfortunately, my father passed suddenly and unexpectedly in 2013. I let these projects go to other people as I had no desire to work on them. Recently, however, I have been looking for an outlet for creativity again, and I want to give metal shaping a shot. Having just received my truck (1985 chevy scottsdale) back from the engine builder, I am eager to being fabricating parts for the interior to customize and create a more "finished" appearance. I have other interests such as building scale replicas and learning how to weld, but I think starting with the basic forms will keep me busy enough.... for now, LOL. Any help to get started is appreciated. I will have many questions, but will do my best to scour the forum and learn rather than be spoon fed. I prefer to learn by watching and doing where I can.
