Hi Jack sorry for being dense on this but i dont follow the explanation for the gap and how you cut for it. I was doing well with the tape and how and why you line up the tape edges. It was when you were subtracting for things that I got lost. Sorry if its too much work but could you explain that section? I wasnt that good at math lol.

Cody, Look at the picture of step 3 below. All this second layer of tape does is let you "see through" the skin. So now, the left edge of the light blue tape is the deck lid opening of the body. Let's say we want .200" gap and we're using 19 ga steel which is about .042 thick. To compensate for a gap and the thickness of the skin you would move to the LEFT (into the opening) .242" and draw a line. That line is where you would tip the hem. Now, from that line you would add material for the hem by moving back to the RIGHT the width of the hem. If you wanted a 5/16" hem you would move from the bend line to the RIGHT .312" and draw another line. That is the cut line.
The lines I drew in the picture are not to scale. I drew them that way for illustration. In reality, the cut line is going to be very close to where the edge of the opening is. Hope that helps.

I'm finally closing in on this deck lid. It's been an adventure, that's for sure. Working alone has it's drawbacks. Most times it's great therapy but sometimes it would be a little easier with some help. Anyway, it's the nature of the work.
I trimmed the rear edge of the skin and got a pretty good fit to the rear body panel. Tomorrow I'll do a little adjusting along the front edge of the skin and I can tack the skin to the frame
Next up is the rear fender buck so we're going to change over from metal shop to wood shop for a while. Stay tuned while I hog up even more bandwidth.

The END is near Jack........the back end of the car anyway.
Great job, and yes it is very difficult to work alone sometimes, on large panels.

Hi Jack,

Great job and a great look to the car! If I lived close by you wouldn't be working alone

Thanks, Jim. I almost always prefer working alone. It's like therapy. I'm in a zone and nothing else enters my mind. It's probably the only time I'm thinking clearly and I'm 100% focused. It's only rarely that I could use a second pair of hands.

Just noticed the following data. Wonder if these are the all time leaders in views?

I think Kerry's project was the most popular with over 293,000 last time I looked.

I got some work done during the week but didn't have much time to post so I'll get you up to date today.I picked up some 3/4 MDF and got started. So I set up and I'm looking for a starting point. How do you reduce a panel with more curves than Melania Trump to straight lines, sharp angles and plumb and square the whole thing?
I started with one of only two straight lines on the whole panel, the line of holes for the body side moulding. I know it's a straight line and it's level to the ground. It will also be the parting line between the welded on upper fender and the detachable lower skirt. I used some 1" tape first, then overlapped that with 2" tape. The lower edge of the two inch tape will be the lower edge of the upper fender where the skirt will mate up. the body side moulding will hang down enough to hide the seam.

Next I leveled everything out. I just stacked up some scrap wood where needed and checked it with a laser.
Then set the laser back to vertical to start locating stations. If you look closely you can see the line i drew using a square laid along the tape baseline. I can only go as far as the curve of the panel allows but it's enough to let me square up the laser. The laser gets most of the surface but not all. On the far end you can hold up anything or just use your finger to catch the beam and continue with the line.
