I would advise you to categorically avoid silica sand, the bright white sort that is used in spa and pool filters, hotel ashtrays, etc. because of the resultant silica dust.

Unwashed sand like the traction sand sold in tubes in Northern climes has a lot of dust, I would avoid that as well. I use a lot of it on my walks and drive each winter and can verify its dust content.

I have used washed play sand, but after reading on another forum have switched to Black Diamond blasting media, as it has negligible silica content, is cheap, and I have it here for my blast cabinet anyways. Comparing the two, the Black Diamond seems firmer. Maybe because it's a larger, sharper granule, so it doesn't move as easily as the play sand?
