So far so good. Don't worry too much about the edges not being an exact fit, that will come with practice and you can fudge around it this time. If you put your tacks about an inch apart and tack the whole seam the tacks will not only shrink the gaps closed you'll also be able to adjust the shape with your hammer and dolly before fully welding the seam. Keep the tacks small and grind the tops off them if necessary. Some will crack as you work them but that's not a problem, just put them back.
Once you're happy with the shape weld it in small bites here and there to keep the heat out and minimise distortion. You ought to be able to get inside with a dolly once you've fully welded the upper half to give the shape a good round of finishing before the bottom goes in.
If I had a motorcycle about the place I'd be making me a tank just for fun.
